The Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO) researches the historical and cultural development processes in the region between the Baltic, Black and Adriatic Seas in a comparative perspective. The wide geographical scope of its research programme requires a special research approach that combines comparative studies, interdisciplinarity and transnationality, and which also takes into account the entire historical depth from the transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages to the present. The GWZO is a member of the Leibniz Association and an affiliate institution of Leipzig University.
The research at the department “Entanglement and Globalization” aims at reconstructing and explaining global entanglement and communication processes in economy, culture, politics and science of Eastern Europe from the early modern times to the present day. The advertised doctoral position is to expand the research spectrum of the subject area “Transnational Knowledge Transfer and Academic Cooperation” towards a history of global entanglements in/of Eastern European natural sciences. We welcome dissertation proposals that promise innovative contributions to an interdisciplinary historiography of science and enable cooperation with the Environmental Humanities.
Your tasks:
- Conducting independent research on the history of entanglements in Eastern European natural sciences (if possible in ornithology) since the late-19th century
- Development of a doctoral project in accordance with the research profile of the department (with a potential focus on the era of the West-East conflict) and preparation of a dissertation
- Connecting your project with the research carried out in other disciplines in the department and at the GWZO as a whole
Your profile:
- A very good university degree in a field of natural sciences or humanities,
- A very good command of English as well as good knowledge in one of the languages spoken in the region under study
- Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration
We offer:
- A creative and motivating work environment, flat hierarchies
- Openness and collaboration based on trust
- The opportunity of further qualification
- A workplace in the centre of Leipzig in close proximity to the Leipzig University campus
We support doctoral researchers in developing, writing and submitting the dissertation manuscript by providing continuous supervision and the possibility of training in research methods and publishing. The doctoral researchers at GWZO participate in the study programme of the Graduate School Global and Area Studies (GSGAS) at Leipzig University and the GWZO research colloquium.
Please send your application together with other standard documents (motivation letter, CV, diplomas), quoting the reference number, by 30 September 2021 to the Director of the GWZO (Prof. Dr. Christian Lübke, Reichsstr. 4-6, 04109 Leipzig) or via email: bewerbung@leibniz-gwzo.de. Application per email bare higher liability in terms of the data protection law and the applicants assumes full responsibility.
Severely disabled applicants will be given priority if they are equally suitable and qualified.
The GWZO actively pursues the goal of gender equality at work; women are expressly encouraged to apply. Applications from women are particularly welcomed and preferred if they have equal qualifications and aptitude, as the position to be filled belongs to a structural unit in which women are underrepresented.
For further information on tasks and work organization, please contact Prof. Dr. Frank Hadler (frank.hadler@leibniz-gwzo.de).
In accordance with the current status, the interviews are scheduled to be held online by the end of October 2021.
