Hi János,

thanks for your advice. I visited Tisza-tó in 2006, too. It really is a nice place to paddle and see birds. The point is, that one can do a kind of round-trip by canoe from Budapest to Budapest via Duná, Sió, Balaton, Zala, Rabá and Duná. That's what I wanted to do in 2006, but I had to skip Kis-Balaton and Zala.

I want to paddle from Balaton to Zala through Kis-Balaton, guided by a ranger. The ranger, that spotted me in 2006, drove a motor boat loaded with tourists. So they do tours there. But that's all I know...

Hy Michael!
As I know that the all bird sanctuaries of Kis-Balaton are closed.
But, why would you travel to the Tisza-tó in the great Hungarian Plain at the next summer? There are a lot of great water areas and channels with high density of wild-birds and swampy plants. The kayaking is usually free in that area. You would take long-long tours there as you like it, with or withouth guide, only with a good map. There are some good camping places too, in the side of water. The usual starting points are in Poroszló and Tiszafüred citiies.
I was there in the last summer, and I would like to go there again.
Regards,
János

Hello everybody,

I was kayaking Balaton in 2006 and ended up in Kis-Balaton Nature Reserve (I didn't know it was forbidden). I soon got spotted by a ranger and were thrown out. I'm quite OK with that, as I normally respect such limitations.

I would like to visit that area again, of course with my kayak, but officially and with a birding guide. I tried to find information about that Nature Reserve, but all I found is in Hungarian (which I don't speak at all). Does anyone have an eMail address to send an English or German request for a one day guided birding tour with canoes or kayaks to that Reserve? Or maybe here is someone working there or doing such tours?

Thanks for all hints,
Michael Kramer

I spent mid-morning birding the small area where the rákos-patak meets the Danube, just north of Arpad Hid on the Pest side. This is a 20 minute walk from my home and my "local patch."
There were lots of Magpies, 10+ Hooded Crows including one possible Carrion crow. It was not a juv. Rook nor a Jackdaw. Had the exact same shape and bill of the Hooded Crows except that this indivdual was slightly smaller and had some feather loss around the neck like an older or diseased bird.
Lots of Blue Tits, Great Tits and 10+ Wood Warblers, 6 Cormorants, 30+ Barn Swallows in the lagoon, 1st yr. Pied Flycatcher, 10+ Black-headed Gulls, 15+ Mallards, spectacular close view of a Hobby stooping for a Barn Swallow, treecreeper, Sparrowhawk attacking a songbird, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 3 Blackcaps, Whitethroat and a few Wood pigeons.
* using "+" to mean the number is estimated.

If anyone is going out by car from Budapest for birding in the next few days, I am interested in coming along.
Some of you have my phone number and can call me. For anyone else, please email me: jedku@yahoo.com.
Any destination worth birding at this time of year is fine for me.
I am happy to pay for the petrol/gas/fuel/benzine!
Thanks,
Jed Marc

Válasz Maria Olsson üzenetére (#3754, 2007-08-25 18:48:55):
Oh yes, and one more thing! I've been trying to figure out how to get to the Kiskunsagi National Park, where you can see the tuzók, but I havent figured it out. I know you can take the bus or the train, but from where? At the information desk at the train station they told me you first have to take the metro to the Köbánya-Kistpest stop, and from there take another train. Is that correct, and if so where does the train stop? I heard you should go to Apaj to see the tuzók, can you get of the train there?

I have a suspicion that it's better to take the bus, but today, I never found the bus station though I looked and folowed directions. Can you take a bus directly from Budapest to Apaj? And if so, where does it depart from? I've tried searching the web, but since I know about 5 words in Hungarian (tuzok being one of them) its sometimes difficult to find the information that I need!

Kössönöm and goodbye!

HelloMaria!
It is correct that the train to Apaj has go from Kőbánya-Kispest railway station. You try to watch usefull trains to Dömsöd-Apaj at the webpage "elvira.hu".
Sorry the travelling by bus is not the best relation to Apaj.
It would be better that you would travel with a Hungarian birder's companion to watch "tuzok"! Please try birders (who knows where is the tuzoks!) in this list who would go there in the next days.
And finally You would have a long long excursion (by your own legs!) in the north Kiskunság plains.
Best regards,
János

Hello!

I just moved to Budapest from Sweden to study, and it would be nice to get to know some birdwatchers! I heard that there is going to be a bird-race on Saturday the 1st of Sept, is that correct? In that case, it there a possibility to come along? I don't know anything else about the race, so please inform me! I'm very happy for other information if there are other birdwatching acticities going on around Budapest!

Hy Marc,
Me again! Try Mr. Bajor Z. or Mr. Lendvai Cs. directly for best and up-to date info for your questions. They are the leaders of Budapest Local Group of MME and have good practice and info about birds of Budapest.
